SUMMER OF LOVE
The Sixties were the age of youth. Over 70 million baby boomers became teenagers and young adults, and demanded change from the conservative 50's. When the 60's happened the Western world came of age. Our revolutionary ways of thinking changed the way people perceived their relationship with the establishment forever, and affected change in education, music, sexual freedom and fashion.
The 60's, however, were remarkably violent. In America, President Kennedy was assassinated as was his brother, Bobby. Reverend Martin Luther King was shot. War errupted in Southeast Asia and violence begat all campuses around the world. "Make Love Not War" was the true chant of our generation, led by rock bands like The Beatles, The Stones, and The Who.
The 60's were a time of change on every level. With the invention of the birth control pill young men and women were allowed to have free love and experience open relationships with one another.
In the beginning of the 60's men wore crew cuts with buttoned down shirts, while women wore bouffant hairstyles and knee length dresses. Again, we changed the fashion forever. Men now wore long hair, beards and moustaches. They wore bell bottom jeans, Nehru jackets and love beads. Womens' hair was tradionally long and they wore mini skirts, granny dresses, bell bottom jeans and love beads.
The Summer of Love was a time of gatherings, happenings, and love-ins. The flower became the symbol of our generation and rebellion against our parents' values. Young men and women wore flowers in their hair. Music played out the psychedelic beat, and in 1967 the Beatles produced Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
You know they say if you remember the 60's you must not have been there, but I know all of us have wonderful memories of growing up during this time. Please tell us your memories of the 60's - we would love to share them with all of our classmates. Plan on coming to your 40th and celebrate the Summer of Love. Our goal is to make this reunion the best, the most unique and one you truly do not want to miss. If you have any 60's memorabila you would like to share, scan the pictures and send them to us. We look forward to seeing each and everyone of you. Carol Crabill (Clark)
